A footprint is the complete board interface.
Nominal pitch is one coordinate. A releaseable footprint also needs the exact pin and row pattern, finished holes or pads, first-pin origin, body outline, mounting details and drawing revision.

Exact identity
Freeze the full model, suffix, position count, pitch variant and drawing revision. A family name is not a footprint identifier.

Mounting method
Separate through-hole solder, surface mount and any board-retention feature before choosing a land pattern.

Pin count and rows
Record electrical pins, mechanical posts, row count, row spacing and any offset or staggered layout.

Pitch and origin
Check adjacent center spacing, first-to-last span, first-pin location and the coordinate origin used by the drawing.

Holes and pads
Use the exact drawing and PCB-fabrication rules for finished-hole, slot, pad and annular-ring decisions; do not derive a universal hole from pitch.

Housing and keep-out
Add the body outline, board-edge limits, latch or flange travel, tool access, conductor bend space and the fully mated envelope.

Revision and sample
Compare the released PCB against the current exact-part drawing, then measure and approve a production-intent sample before volume use.
WHY A NEAR MATCH FAILS

The source manufacturer, exact orderable variant, revision and dimensions still need verification.

PCB FOOTPRINT FAQ
Questions to close before board release.
Do two PCB terminal blocks with the same pitch share a footprint?
Do not assume so. Pin size, row spacing, first-pin location, mechanical posts, housing outline, orientation and retention can differ even when the nominal pitch and position count match.
Can I calculate the PCB hole diameter from terminal block pitch?
No. Pitch is contact-center spacing, not pin cross-section or finished-hole size. Use the current exact-model drawing and the PCB fabricator's finished-hole and pad rules.
Can a product photo be used to create the final footprint?
A photo can help identify the family and orientation, but it does not prove scale, pin geometry, hidden posts, tolerances or drawing revision. Use it only to narrow the search.
Are vertical and right-angle terminal blocks footprint-compatible?
Not automatically. The pin layout, first-pin location, body outline, board-edge depth, wire or mating approach and service envelope can change with the exact model.
Is a KiCad or other CAD-library footprint enough for release?
Treat it as a candidate tied to its stated source. Verify the exact manufacturer series, orderable variant, source drawing, dimensions and revision, then compare a real sample before release.
What should I send for a footprint-matching RFQ?
Send the existing model or BOM line, drawing revision, pitch, positions and rows, hole and pad pattern, first-pin origin, body or keep-out outline, mounting and solder process, quantity, market and required documents.
